TreeAzin™ Systemic Insecticide: A New Bioinsecticide to Combat Emerald Ash Borer

TreeAzin™ Systemic Insecticide has received emergency registration from  Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency in 2010 for use against Emerald Ash Borer in Ontario and Quebec.

TreeAzin™ is formulated with azadirachtin, a natural product derived from neem tree seeds.

When injected into ash trees with the EcoJect System®, TreeAzin™ is rapidly taken up by the tree. Research has shown that, at very low doses, TreeAzin™ inhibits emerald ash borer larval development and prevents adult emergence.

TreeAzin™ may be used preventatively or at the onset of an outbreak providing protection for two years with a single application.

TreeAzin™ is exempt from Ontario's Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Act. In Ontario, TreeAzin™ is scheduled as a class 4 bioinsecticide or "low risk pesticide" that is commercial, non-domestic, with a class 11 active ingredient. TreeAzin™ is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic crops.

TreeAzin™, owned by the Canadian Forest Service, was developed in collaboration with BioForest Technologies Inc., who holds its worldwide license.

Many tree care providers and arborists now provide emerald ash borer treatment services with TreeAzin ™ in Ontario and Quebec. In Ontario, TreeAzin™ may only be applied by licensed applicators.
